In March 1971, using the violence as an excuse, the Pakistan Army intervened to stem the growth of nationalist sentiments in the east. Tensions between Bengalis and Biharis – the Urdu-speaking communities that had moved to East Pakistan from different parts of India after Partition and who were seen as pro-West Pakistan – rose, which led to attacks on some Bihari communities. Tensions rose in December 1970 when the Awami League party, led by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman (also known as Mujib) and based in East Pakistan, won the national elections but West Pakistan parties, namely the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), refused to hand over power. The refusal to accept Bengali as a state language of Pakistan in the early years after Partition, economic disparity between the two parts, the hegemony of the West Pakistani ruling elite over Pakistan, martial laws, and a demeaning attitude towards Bengali culture and the Bengali population soured relations between the two parts. On the occasion of Victory Day, a discussion titled 'Upholding the spirit of the Liberation War and the best use of digital technology in building the Sonar Bangla as dreamt by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman' will be held at the national, district and upazila levels across the country. National dailies will bring out special supplements highlighting the significance of the day while electronic media will broadcast month-long special programmes based on the Liberation War.ĭifferent social and cultural organisations will organise Liberation War-based discussions, cultural events and drawing, essay and sports competitions for children and display Liberation War-related documentaries. Bands of different forces will play music at various important places. Important roads and road islands in the capital and other cities across the country will be decorated with national flags and colourful festoons. The national flag will be hoisted atop all government, semi-government and private offices as well as offices of autonomous bodies across the country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will also attend it.
President Md Abdul Hamid will attend the programme as the chief guest and inspect the parade along with taking Salam (salute).
They will be followed by the family members of Bir Sreshthos, wounded freedom fighters and other valiant freedom fighters led by the liberation war affairs minister, foreign diplomats, invited guests of allied force members of the Liberation War from the Indian Army, leaders of different political and social organisations and people from all walks of life.Ī colourful parade of combined forces will be held at the National Parade Square at the Tejgaon Old Airport at 10:30 am. President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will pay tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial at Savar with the sunrises. The day will start with 31 gun salutes in the dawn in the city on Friday, said an official handout here today.

On December 16, 1971, Bangladesh emerged as an independent state under the leadership of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The government has drawn up elaborate programmes to celebrate Victory Day 2022 on December 16 as the country was liberated from the clutches of Pakistani occupation forces after a nine-month bloody War on the day in 1971.
